Americans Get Failing Grade in American Civics

19 September, 2007 by Matt Robison

And now, I bring you more proof that Americans don’t really care about the liberty they claim to enjoy.

The Acton Institute Blog brings attention to a study commissioned by Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s (ISI) National Civic Literacy Program.

The study found that colleges and universities are doing a horrible job in teaching students about basic American history and civics. No school scored higher than a D+. (Harvard was the highest, with an average student score of 69.56%.)

Since the largest weapon against tyranny is a well-educated populace, this doesn’t exactly bode well for our so-called freedom. Of course, with the government worship that goes on in our society, it doesn’t surprise me.

You can take the test yourself right here. I scored an 83.33%, getting 50 of the 60 questions correct.

So apparently, the education I get by wasting countless hours on the internet has prepared me better than a Harvard education, at least in this particular topic. I find this comforting, a fine testimony to this Age of Information. It really is changing everything.

How do you measure up to America’s brightest college students?
